Mike Kandler
Head Men's Baseball Coach

Michael Kandler is anxious to begin his 5th season as the Head Baseball Coach at Gulf Coast Community College. Coach Kandler has been coaching for 23 years. Coach Kandler has a career record of 446-225. His record at the helm of the Commodores is an impressive 133-69 (.658 winning %), and two state appearances. Having coached over 50 players who have been drafted, including big-leaguers Bob Wickman and Tim Spooneybarger, Coach Kandler is no stranger to developing big-time talent.
Prior to coming to Gulf Coast, Coach Kandler spent 5 years at Alabama Southern Community College. While at ASCC Coach Kandler's team combined for a record of 180-104 and qualified for 4 regional tournaments. He coached 3 All-Americans and over 30 players that went on to play at the next level.
Prior to his stop at Alabama Southern, Coach Kandler was the head coach at Pine Forest High School in Pensacola, Florida for six years. His record at Pine Forest was 133-51. His Pine Forest Teams qualified for the state playoffs 5 times, made two final-8 appearances and one final-4 appearance in 1997.
Coach Kandler has also coached at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, the University of California-San Diego and was the assistant coach here at Gulf Coast from 1991-94.
Coach Kandler brings an intense, enthusiastic approach to coaching baseball. Gulf Coast promises to be a hard-nosed, aggressive team under his direction. The Commodores should be a fundamentally sound team that is extremely fun to watch.

Steve Merchant
Assistant Men's Baseball Coach

This will be Steve's fifth season as Assistant Baseball Coach for the Commodores. This year, Steve will be asked to be our Director of Baseball Operations. He will be asked to bring technology to our program. He will be implementing "Live Stats" and other neat features to our baseball games. Furthermore, Steve will be asked to handle the day to day operations of the team.
Steve has been coaching baseball for 23 years and has won four State Championships: 2 Dizzy Dean (89, 94), 1 Babe Ruth (91) and 1 USSSA (98); and four World Series: 1 Dizzy Dean (94), 1 CABA (01), and 2 USA Junior Olympic Titles (00, 01). In 1987, Steve began his coaching career with the local American Legion Post 66 Squad. In 1997, Steve helped create what is now Team Florida USA. This will be Steve's 13th season as Director of Baseball Operations and Manager of TFUSA.
Steve is a graduate of Bay High School (1978) and Gulf Coast Community College (1980). He is a former Commodore and played for the late Bill Frazier.

Michael Murphree
Assistant Men's Baseball Coach

This will be Mike's first season as Assistant Baseball Coach for the Commodores. He will be our hitting instructor as well as work with all position players. Mike will also be asked to be our recruiting coordinator.
Mike was an assistant coach at Troy University for 5 seasons (05, 06, 08, 09) and Northwest-Shoals Community College for 1 season (07). Murphree was appointed to the Alabama Baseball Coaches Association Board of Directors in the fall of 2008. He has successfully coordinated regional workouts for the underclassmen event for the last two years for the Association.
Murphree is a native of Athens, Ala., and played football, basketball and baseball at East Limestone High School. He was an All-Area selection in baseball and basketball in 1998 and was an honorable mention All-State selection in 1996 and 1997. Murphree started his college playing career at Northwest Shoals Community College in 1999-2000, helping the team to its first and only state title in 1999. He moved from there to Martin Methodist College where he was an All-Conference selection in 2002. Murphree earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Sport & Fitness Management from Troy University in 2005.
