GC splits pair of tourney matches
NEWS HERALD (Staff ) - Sarah Augustin had 32 assists and 13 digs at Gulf Coast Community College beat Lake Sumter 25-17, 25-18, 25-12. Teammate Brittany Dennison had nine kills and 15 digs, Jackie Varnum (Bay) had nine kills and five blocks, Jessica Colyer had eight kills and four blocks, and Casey Slater had three aces and 12 digs. Gulf Coast (14-15) hosts Gadsden State and Jeff Davis at 1 and 3 p.m. today. There will be a run at 7:30 a.m. as part of a Volley for a Cure event.

NEWS HERALD (Staff ) - Sarah Augustin had 32 assists and 13 digs at Gulf Coast Community College beat Lake Sumter 25-17, 25-18, 25-12. Teammate Brittany Dennison had nine kills and 15 digs, Jackie Varnum (Bay) had nine kills and five blocks, Jessica Colyer had eight kills and four blocks, and Casey Slater had three aces and 12 digs. PJC beats GCCC in final meeting of season
NEWS HERALD (Josh Weinfuss ) - MILTON - Panahandle Conference champion Pensacola Junior College edged Gulf Coast Community College in their final meeting of the year. PJC won 25-9, 10-25, 25-22, 21-25, 11-15. Gulf Coast's Brittany Dennison had 11 kills, 16 digs and nine blocks, Sarah Augustin 37 assists, 15 digs and three aces, Jackie Varnum (Bay) 11 kills and 15 blocks and Casey Slater 21 digs. The Lady Commodores (12-14 overall, 1-4 in the conference) hosts the Volley for Cure tournament this weekend at the Billy Harrison Health Center.

NEWS HERALD (Josh Weinfuss ) - BREWTON, Ala. - Candace Nordin had seven kills and nine digs to lead a balanced attack as the Gulf Coast Community College volleyball team beat Jefferson Davis Community College 20-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-17 on Thursday. Teammate Sarah Augustin added 25 assists and eight 8 digs. Jackie Varnum (Bay) had nine kills and seven blocks, and Jessica Colyer had eight kills and nine aces. Gulf Coast (13-14) plays at Pensacola Junior College at 6 p.m. CDT on Tuesday.

GCCC rebounds with two wins in Lake Sumter tourney
NEWS HERALD (Josh Weinfuss ) - LEESBURG - Gulf Coast's Sarah Augustin had 59 assists as the Lady Commodores won two matches in the Lake Sumter volleyball tournament on Saturday. Gulf Coast defeated Brevard 25-15, 25-14, 25-12 and St. John's River 25-23, 25-14, 25-20. Augustin also had three aces. Candace Nordin had 19 kills, two aces and 16 digs, Jessica Colyer had 17 kills and Lauren Elsworth added 19 kills and four aces. The Lady Commodores (12-13) finished the tournament 2-2. Gulf Coast plays Jeff Davis in Brewton, Ala., on Thursday.

GCCC falls twice in Lake Sumter tournament
NEWS HERALD (Josh Weinfuss ) - LEESBURG - The Gulf Coast Community College women's volleyball team on Friday lost its two games in the Lake Sumter Tournament. GC fell to Manatee 26-24, 25-18, 21-25, 25-18 and then lost to Lake Sumter 25-23, 26-24, 25-27, 25-16. Jackie Varnum was a force at the net for GC, finishing with 21 kills and 15 blocks. Brittany Dennison had 16 kills, four aces, 14 digs and seven blocks, Sarah Augustin 61 assists, 21 digs and four blocks, Jessica Colyer 12 kills, nine aces and five blocks, Lauren Elsworth 14 kills and four blocks and Casey Slater 27 digs. The Lady Commodores (10-14) play Brevard and St. Johns River Saturday at 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. CDT.

Volley for Cure Fun run and Tournament
Gulf Coast Community College Volleyball Program is hosting a tournament consisting of five teams from the state of Alabama and Florida on October 25th. October being breast cancer awareness month, the tournament is named "Volley for a Cure". There will be a 1.1 mile fun run around the campus of Gulf Coast Community College for women of all ages before the tournament begins. The run will begin at 7:30 AM in front of the Wellness Building/gym. We invite moms, daughters, cousins, aunts, and grandmothers to participate in the fun run. Registration is $15 per person, and all proceeds benefit breast cancer research. Included in the cost is a pink t-shirt and free admission to the volleyball tournament. Please fill out the form below and mail it to Gulf Coast Community College. T-shirts will be ready for pick-up on Friday October 24th at GCCC in the gym lobby from 2 PM - 6 PM. GCCC beats PJC for first time this season
NEWS HERALD (Josh Weinfuss ) - PANAMA CITY - Gulf Coast rallied from a two-game deficit to defeat Panhandle Conference rival Pensacola for the first time this season, 19-25, 18-25, 25-22, 25-18, 15-12. Brittany Dennison led the charge with nine kills, 13 digs and six blocks. Sarah Augustin had 37 assists and four aces, Jackie Varnum 10 kills and 10 blocks and Casey Slater 13 digs for the Lady Commodores (10-12). Gulf Coast is at the Lake Sumter Tournament beginning on Friday.

GC wins two of three in tourney
NEWS HERALD (Josh Weinfuss ) - MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. - Sarah Augustin had 75 assists, 13 aces and 21 digs as Gulf Coast's volleyball team won two of three matches Friday on the first day of a tournament hosted by Northwest Shoals Community College. The Lady Commodores opened the day with a victory over Lawson State Community College 25-13, 25-4, 25-13. They followed with a loss to the host team 25-16, 25-20, 25-19. In the final match of the day, Gulf Coast beat Wallace Community College 25-8, 25-19, 23-25, 25-17. For Gulf Coast, Brittany Dennison added 23 kills, seven aces, eight digs and three blocks; Jackie Varnum (Bay) had 20 kills and 12 blocks; Jessica Colyer had 15 kills and 10 aces; Lauren Elsworth had 13 kills and 14 aces; and Casey Slater had 31 digs. Gulf Coast (9-10) continues with pool play Saturday morning against John A. Logan Community College. If it gets out of pool play, it will play in at least one more match later in the day.

GCCC defeats Faulkner JV
NEWS HERALD (Josh Weinfuss ) - MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Gulf Coast Community College volleyball team swept the Faulkner University junior varsity squad 25-15, 25-10, 25-7 on Thursday night. GC was led by Brittany Dennison with six kills, two aces and 10 digs, Sarah Augustin 21 assists and 10 digs, and Jackie Varnum (Bay) with seven kills and seven blocks. The Lady Commodores, 7-9, will compete in the Northwest Shoals tournament Friday and Saturday in Muscle Shoals, Ala.

PJC defeats GC to clinch conference title
NEWS HERALD (Josh Weinfuss ) - MILTON - Pensacola Junior College defeated Gulf Coast 26-28, 25-22, 25-21, 25-13 on Tuesday in Panhandle Conference play. The loss eliminates Gulf Coast (6-9, 0-3) from postseason play. Brittany Dennison led GC with eight kills, two blocks and 14 digs. Lauren Elsworth had five kills and two blocks, Sarah Augustin had 24 assits, Jackie Varnum added eight kills and five blocks and Jessica Colyer had six kills and three blocks for the Commodores. Gulf Coast plays at Faulkner State on Thursday then heads to a tournament North West Shoals on Friday.

GCCC volleyball 1-3 in tourney
NEWS HERALD (Josh Weinfuss ) - PANAMA CITY - Gulf Coast's volleyball team lost both of its matches Saturday in the final day of the Ashley Slonina Memorial Tournament at Billy Harrison Field House. The Lady Commodores lost to St. Johns River 25-15, 25-22, 20-25, 16-25, 15-11 in their first match. Gulf Coast then was swept by Bevill State 25-23, 25-13, 25-18. Gulf Coast was led by Brittany Dennison with 14 kills, 20 digs, five aces and three blocks; Sarah Augustin with 56 assists and 17 digs; Jackie Varnum (Bay) with 12 kills and five blocks; Lauren Elsworth with 13 kills and 10 aces; Casey Slater with 22 digs; and Jessica Colyer with 11 kills and six blocks.

GC volleyball positive despite loss
NEWS HERALD (Josh Weinfuss ) - PANAMA CITY - Although Gulf Coast is down 2-0 to Pensacola in the race for the Panhandle Conference's lone berth at the volleyball state tournament, the Lady Commodores still believe they can win it. Their spirits weren't dampened after a 25-23, 25-22, 25-18 loss to the Lady Pirates at the Billy Harrison Field House on Tuesday night.

NEWS HERALD (Staff ) - PANAMA CITY Sarah Augustin had five kills, 33 assists and 11 digs, but it wasn’t quite enough as Gulf Coast lost a five-set volleyball match to Florida College 25-20, 20-25, 17-25, 25-21, 15-9 on Thursday. Lauren Elsworth had 11 kills and four blocks for the Lady Commodores; LaToya Kelso (Bay) had nine kills and five blocks; and Casey Slater had four aces and 23 digs. Gulf Coast dropped to 5-4 and hosts Pensacola Junior College in a Panhandle Conference match on Tuesday.

GC drops conference opener
NEWS HERALD (Staff ) - MILTON The Pensacola Junior College volleyball team defeated Gulf Coast 22-25, 25-13, 25-18, 23-25, 17-15 on Tuesday in the opening Panhandle Conference match for both teams. Gulf Coast freshman Sarah Augustin led the Commodores with 28 assists, four aces and 12 digs. Brittany Dennison had eight kills and 17 digs and LaToya Kelso had seven blocks for GC. The Commodores fall to 5-3 this season. Gulf Coast hosts Florida College on Thursday at 6 p.m. and hosts Pensacola on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

GC volleyball wins three in tourney
NEWS HERALD (Staff ) - MILTON - Casey Slater had 51 digs and seven aces, and made the alltournament team, as Gulf Coast Community College won three of four matches in a tournament at Pensacola Junior College on Friday and Saturday. The Lady Commodores on Friday beat Faulkner University 27-25, 25-12, 25-20, and Bevill (Ala.) Community College 25-15, 25-20, 25-20. On Saturday, Gulf Coast lost to Wallace State 22-25, 25-16, 25-11, 26-24, then beat Jefferson Davis 25-17, 25-18, 25-14. Gulf Coast was led by Brittany Dennison with 24 kills, 40 digs and four blocks; Sarah Augustin with 109 assists, six aces and 34 digs; Jackie Varnum (Bay) with 23 kills and 14 blocks; and LaToya Kelso (Bay) with 28 kills and seven blocks. Gulf Coast (5-2) opens its Panhandle Conference season at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Pensacola Junior College.

GC volleyball wins two in tourney
NEWS HERALD (Staff ) - JACKSONVILLE - Gulf Coast won two of three matches in a tournament Friday and Saturday at Florida Community College, but will now have to wait nearly two weeks before playing again. The Commodores' home opener, scheduled for Monday against Jefferson Davis Community College from Brewton, Ala., has been canceled because of potential weather problems. Gulf Coast opened the tournament on Friday with a 22-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-1 victory over Cape Fear Community College from North Carolina. The Commodores' split a pair of matches on Saturday - losing to host FCC 25-19, 25-13, 25-12, then beating Lincoln Land Community College from Illinois in a five-set match, 14-25, 25-17, 20-25, 25-16, 15-10.

GC volleyball team ready for 2008 season
NEWS HERALD (Josh Weinfuss ) - PANAMA CITY - Some things are in transition for the Gulf Coast volleyball program. Co-head coach Kristin Bortnick has moved away, leaving Terri Bedford as the lone coach, and just four of last year's eight freshmen returned from a team that went 16-18 and won its first Panhandle Conference championship since 2003. "We are young, but not any younger than we were last year," Bedford said. "We only had two sopho-mores on the court, so it's not really any different for us. We're kind of used to it." The Lady Commodores open their 2008 season Saturday with a tournament at Wallace State in Ala-bama. Bedford won't be alone on the sidelines. Former Lady Commodore Shana Ramsey was hired as an assistant coach.
