The News Herald

PANAMA CITY — The Gulf Coast baseball team split a doubleheader against Pensacola State on Saturday afternoon at Frazier Field, dropping the first game 13-8 and winning the second 1-0.

The results leave the Commodores at 20-11 overall and 2-5 in the Panhandle Conference, while the Pirates are now 15-21 and 2-9 in league play.

Pensacola State scored four runs in the top of the first inning in the first game and added eight in the sixth to take a 13-1 lead. The Commodores scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth but were shut out in the seventh.

Jack Guzek started and took the loss for Gulf Coast, lasting just one inning and giving up four runs on three hits, including two home runs, and a walk with one strikeout.

Brett Wisely was 1 for 4 with a double and three RBI, with Kyler Hultgren going 2 for 3 with a run and two RBI. Alex Lozado was 2 for 4 with a double, two runs, and an RBI, while Evan Johnson was 2 for 4 with a run.

The Commodores scored a single run in the second inning of the second game and that was enough support for Hunter Milam and Brad Lord, who combined for seven shutout innings.

Milam started and got the win, giving up three hits and four walks with five strikeouts. Lord earned the save for three innings of relief in which he allowed one hit and struck out one batter.

Gulf Coast’s lone run came when Justin Kelley walked and scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by Dalton Gunter. Reid Halfacre also had a hit and a walk.

The teams will wrap up the four-game series Tuesday in Pensacola with a game at 5 p.m.
