GC softball splits opener, baseball goes to 3-0

By Dustin Kent
The Gulf Coast softball team opened its season with a doubleheader in Clearwater on Friday and came away with a 16-4 win over Miami Dade and a 9-5 loss to Georgia Military Academy.

The Commodore baseball team was also in action and moved to 3-0 on the young season with a 4-2 victory over ASA College.

The Lady Commodores had no trouble at all in their first game Friday, piling up 18 hits with four home runs to cruise to the win.

Summer Johnson had a monster game at the plate, finishing 4 for 4 with two home runs, a double, four runs, and five RBI.

Emily Greek and Belle Wolfenden also added homers, with Taylor Robinson and Hanna Segers leading the way with three hits each.

Caroline Wooley, Taylor Lee, and Camryn Michallas all drove in two runs, with Lee also pitching two innings in relief of starter Brittany Crowson, who gave up just one run in five innings to get the win.

Crowson struggled mightily in the next game, however, recording just one out and giving up seven runs - five earned - before being replaced by Lee.

Georgia Military College finished with eight runs in the first inning and tacked on another in the third.

Lee went 5 2/3 innings and allowed one earned run on seven hits.

Johnson had another big game at the plate, going 2 for 4 with her third home run of the day and three RBI. Taylor Robinson doubled and scored twice.

The Gulf Coast baseball team used a three-run ninth inning rally to keep its perfect record intact, with Josiah Miller launching a three-run home run over the right field fence in the top of the ninth to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead.

Jon Allen closed it out on the mound with a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the ninth.

Alex Lozado started and went four innings, giving up just one earned run on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Avery Stephens allowed one unearned run in three innings of relief.

Miller’s homer was just the second hit of the day for the Commodores, with Geoffrey Lancaster adding the other on a one-out single in the eighth.

In the ninth it was Justin Kelley reaching on a walk and Dallan Leach getting hit by a pitch to put two runners on for Miller with two outs.
