PENSACOLA — Gulf Coast’s men’s basketball team picked up a win in its regular season debut Thursday night, holding off a pesky Faith Baptist squad 77-72.

Jeremy Harris led the Commodores with 18 points and 12 rebounds to go with three assists, three steals, and two blocked shots, followed by Van Johnson with 17 points, and Tyler Byrd with 12 points. Dyshane Murphy added 11 points and six assists. Former Bay standout Cody Johnson had five points and three rebounds in his college debut.

Gulf Coast led 40-31 at halftime, but Faith Baptist hung around and cut the deficit to just five at the seven-minute mark. The Commodores responded with a run to go up by 10 points and kept Faith Baptist at arm’s length the rest of the way.

“They’ve got some nice players and they’re very scrappy,” Commodores coach Jay Powell said of Faith Baptist. “They played really hard. Our guys did a good job of just continuing to play when some things didn’t go our way. We kept playing and the guys did a good job of staying

the course for the first game of the year. I was pleased with that.”

The Commodores have another game in Pensacola Friday against Santa Fe at 5:30 p.m.
