Gulf Coast men get 2nd conference win

PENSACOLA — The Gulf Coast men’s basketball team notched its second Panhandle Conference victory of the season Saturday night by knocking off Pensacola State 71-59.

Jacolbey Owens scored 18 points on 7 of 14 shooting from the field along with four assists to lead the Commodores, who improved to 14-14 overall and 2-9 in Panhandle play.

KK Godwin also had 17 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals, with Maurice Gordon scoring 14 points. Cameron Holden scored all 11 of his points in the second half.

McLeon Charles led the Pirates (14-13, 2-8) with 16 points, followed by De’monte Nelson with 10 points, and Bryce Hunt with nine. Shawndarius Cowart also had seven points, 13 rebounds, and four assists.

The Pirates led by a point at halftime, but the Commodores outscored them 40-27 in the second half. Gulf Coast made 15 of 24 shots in the game’s final 20 minutes, including 6 of 9 from the 3-point line.

Pensacola State made just 11 of 31 shots in the second half, including 3 of 11 from three.
