Gulf Coast men enter NJCAA rankings at No. 10

The latest NJCAA top 25 rankings were released Monday afternoon, with the Gulf Coast women remaining No. 1 in the nation where the Lady Commodores (5-0) have been all season.

New to the whole nationally-ranked thing are the Gulf Coast men, who went from receiving votes last week to No. 10 in the new poll following wins over No. 3 Indian Hills and East Mississippi over the weekend in Niceville.

The Commodores (6-0) also have wins over previously ranked teams Daytona State and Georgia Highlands on their resume.

They also ascended four spots to No. 1 in the state rankings with 11 first place votes, followed by Florida Southwestern with four.

First-year Gulf Coast men’s coach Phil Gaffney said he and his players were excited about their new rankings but also wary about buying into their own hype.

“You don’t want success to come a little too quickly,” he said. “We’re excited for the school and excited for the program. Jay Powell kind of built the foundation and we’re coming in the backside to get it to the next level, so we’re real excited for the guys.

“It’s pretty impressive to be top 10 in the country. Obviously coach Scovel lives in the top 10, but for us it’s new territory. To be No. 1 in the state out of 20 teams shows a lot of respect. We have a lot of hard working guys who deserve a lot of the credit.”

The Commodores are one of four Panhandle Conference teams ranked in the top 25 along with No. 7 Chipola, No. 13 Tallahassee, and No. 18 Northwest Florida State.

Chipola is No. 3 in the state, followed by Tallahassee, Northwest Florida State, Miami Dade, Polk State, Pensacola State, Central Florida, and Daytona State.

The Lady Commodores are one of four PC teams in the national poll along with No. 4 Northwest Florida State, No. 7 Chipola, and No. 23 Pensacola State.

Gulf Coast’s women garnered all 16 first place votes in the state poll, followed by Northwest Florida State, Chipola, Florida Southwestern, Pensacola State, Miami Dade, Eastern Florida State, Daytona State, St. Petersburg, and Tallahassee.
