PANAMA CITY BEACH - Payton Carpenter had to think about it for a moment, but then she knew that her answer was solid.

"I would have to say the day at the plate," the Pace graduate said after slugging two doubles and a three-run home run in Gulf Coast's 13-2 five-inning win Friday afternoon against Andrew College in junior college softball.

The opening victory in the Visit Panama City Beach Gulf Coast Classic at Frank Brown Park was the fourth straight win for the Lady Commodores, 4-1. They played Spartanburg Methodist later Friday.

Carpenter pitched the first two innings against the Georgia school, but it was her bat that opened a big lead. Carpenter had a two-run double in the first inning that scored Bailey Burk and Kynedi Tipler, led off a two-run third inning with a double and then slammed a three-run home run when Gulf Coast blew open the game in the top of the fourth.

"It's a lot more realistic than me having a shutout," Carpenter said, despite her two scoreless innings in the circle. Freshman Brittany Lee pitched the final three innings for the Lady Commodores.

"I'm not here to shut down teams, but to let my defense work."

Gulf Coast was able to score in every inning against the opponent from Cuthbert, Ga., and it wound up being an easy triumph. After four difficult games last weekend in Clearwater to open the season, Carpenter wasn't looking past the Tigers 4-4.

"I was always told that the best respect for another team was not to play down," Carpenter said. "We've got a lot of new blood, but we've also got a lot of talent and speed."

Sam Burks added two doubles, Bailey Burk had a triple and scored two runs, Alexis Marchozzi homered and Annsley Brown, Brittany Lee, Sam Burks, Bailey Heineman and Bailey Pelky knocked in runs.

Angela Heimback and Kenley Kennedy had solo home runs against Gulf Coast reliever Lee, who pitched the final three innings. Lee struck out three, and Cheyanne Tillman added a double for the Tigers.
