COLUMBUS, Ga. — Payton Carpenter and Kristina Manthei combined on a four-hit shutout as Gulf Coast blanked Wabash Valley 3-0 on Saturday in the NFCA junior college softball tournament.

The Lady Commodores, 19-10, split two games for the second straight day in the event. Central Alabama scored four runs in the top of the first and Gulf Coast managed only two hits while making four errors in a 6-2 setback earlier Saturday.

Kynadi Tipler knocked in two runs in the top of the first inning against Wabash Valley and it was more than enough as Gulf Coast made only one error in the field.

Annsley Brown had two hits for the Lady Commodores and Alexis Marchozzi had the other RBI. Gulf Coast managed only five hits.

The Lady Commodores split two games Friday, unable to take advantage of an excellent opportunity to win twice.

Three pitchers combined for a six-hit shutout in a 4-0 win over Lansing. Brittany Lee and Marchozzi each had two hits for the Lady Commodores and Carpenter had two runs batted in. Bailey Burk and Lee also knocked in runs.

The Lady Commodores fell 8-4 to Indian Hills in nine innings later Friday in a game they let slip away twice. Gulf Coast led 4-2 entering the fifth, but Indian Hills rallied with two runs and the game went to extra innings.

The Falcons were held scoreless in the top of the eighth and Gulf Coast had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the inning. The Lady Commodores couldn’t score, however, and Indian Hills scored four runs in the top of the ninth.

Marchozzi had three RBIs in a losing effort. Gulf Coast completes its stay in Georgia with a single game vs. Midland at 9 a.m. today.
