GC softball splits at Pensacola

PENSACOLA — Gulf Coast ended a scoring drought in the first inning while winning the opener 8-2 en route to a doubleheader split with Pensacola on Saturday in Panhandle Conference softball.

 

The Lady Commodores, 25-16, 6-6, couldn’t hold a 3-0 lead in Game 2 and the Pirates rallied for a 5-3 victory. The split kept Gulf Coast one game behind idle Northwest Florida, 6-4, which is in second place behind conference leader Chipola. Pensacola is 3-9.

 

Gulf Coast produced three runs in the top of the first inning of Game 1 to end a scoreless string of 16 consecutive innings. The Lady Commodores scored four more times after two were out in the sixth inning to win going away.

 

Annsley Brown had a run-scoring double and Sirdy Marchozzi a two-run single in the sixth to help secure the win. Marchozzi had three RBIs and Kynadi Tipler two in the victory.

 

Kristina Manthei pitched a complete game overcoming two Pirates’ runs in the first inning. She scattered eight hits and struck out four to notch the win. Bailey Burk and Brown each had two hits.

 

Gulf Coast then jumped on Pensacola starter Heather Keane for two runs top open the second game. Tipler knocked in both runs with the third hit of the inning, and Gulf Coast made it 3-0 when Samantha Burks lead off with a double in the second and Brittany Lee brought her in.

 

The Pirates rallied with three runs in the third inning to tie it 3-3. Jensen Strickland had two RBIs in the surge, and Madison Marshall knocked in two runs in the sixth to provide the difference.

 

Gulf Coast will host Tallahassee in a conference doubleheader starting 4 p.m. Thursday.
