PANAMA CITY — A swirling wind that gusted and mostly blew toward the infield probably had a lot to do with Gulf Coast and Tallahassee combining to score 39 fewer runs than when they met in their previous doubleheader on March 22 in Tallahassee.

More importantly for the Lady Commodores, they swept their twinbill with the Lady Eagles on Thursday at Joe Tom King Field winning 6-4 and 3-2. That was in stark contrast to the 15-12 and 14-13 scores from the split in their prior meeting.

Gulf Coast received strong pitching from all three hurlers in the circle and did just enough offensively to improve to 8-6 in the conference. That pulled the Lady Commodores within percentage points of second place Northwest Florida State, 7-5 going into its

doubleheader today with last-place Pensacola. Tallahassee dropped to 4-12 in the PC. Leader Chipola is far ahead at 13-1.

Payton Carpenter and Kristina Manthei limited the Lady Eagles to five hits in the second game, but Gulf Coast had to rally with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure the sweep.

Annsley Brown singled and Sirdy Marchozzi walked to begin the rally. Kynadi Tipler forced Brown at third, but Carpenter laced a run-scoring single and Tipler scored while Samantha Burks was grounding to third.

The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when Tipler singled, Carpenter doubled and Burks’ sacrifice fly made it 1-0.

Tallahassee had only one hit against Carpenter before scoring a pair of unearned runs in the fifth to take the lead. Brandie Callaway had an RBI single and Brooke Bates scored Sam Malik with a sacrifice fly.

Carpenter had three of Gulf Coast’s six hits and Tipler two. Callaway had two hits for the Lady Eagles as Manthei picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief.

Brittany Lee took a one-hitter into the seventh inning of the opener as the Lady Commodores survived a three-run rally by TCC. This time it was Carpenter coming on to get the final two outs with baserunners on first and third representing the tying runs.

Gulf Coast had only seven hits, but four of them were for extra bases and each of them drove in a run. Burks, Brown and Bayleigh Heineman all had RBI triples into the right-field corner and Jenna Ewing drilled a pinch-hit RBI double in the sixth inning.

Gulf Coast trailed momentarily when Kristin Gunter’s RBI single gave the Lady Eagles a 1-0 edge in the third. The Lady Commodores had back-to-back triples while taking the lead in the fourth and scored three runs in the fifth inning for some breathing room.

Seven different players each had one hit for Gulf Coast. Gunter paced Tallahassee with two hits and two runs batted in.

Gulf Coast plays single games against Chipola and Pensacola in the second conference round robin on Saturday in Tallahassee.
