VERO BEACH — Gulf Coast fought back with two runs in the top of the seventh inning to force extra innings on Friday before losing its state tournament softball opener 5-4 to State College of Florida at Manatee.

The nine-inning defeat dropped the Lady Commodores to 28-22 and into the losers’ bracket and one defeat from having an early departure from the NJCAA/FCSAA Region 8 tournament.

They met Santa Fe in an elimination game later Friday. The start of that game was pushed back because of another game held on the same field following their nine-inning game. Santa Fe was defeated 9-6 by Indian River State earlier.

Gulf Coast immediately fell behind 3-0 in the first inning, and despite Kristina Manthei coming on and pitching outstanding relief couldn’t avoid elimination and finished the season 28-23.

Santa Fe prevailed 4-2. Annsley Brown had three hits to pace the Lady Commodores and Samantha Burks had two hits and produced both their runs.

Gulf Coast rallied in the seventh as Kynadi Tipler doubled and Payton Burton singled, but couldn’t overcome a three-run deficit and match their earlier seventh-inning magic despite having the tying run on base.

Panhandle Conference teams had mixed results on opening day. Tallahassee began the event with an 8-0 loss to Florida Southwestern, but Chipola blanked Hillsborough 5-0. Northwest Florida State then bounced St. Petersburg 10-3 while Gulf Coast was losing.

Hillsborough was the first team eliminated, followed by Tallahassee, which lost 3-2 in 10 innings to Palm Beach State. Gulf Coast went out third.

Central Florida provided the biggest surprise early by edging No. 1 seed Chipola 1-0. Northwest Florida played Seminole State late Friday.
