Payton Carpenter and Annsley Brown continued their torrid play as Gulf Coast completed a successful Visit Panama City Beach Gulf Coast Classic on Saturday at Frank Brown Park.

The Lady Commodores could have swept their four games in the tournament, but succumbed to an eight-run rally by Faulkner State in their final game to fall 8-6. That ended their six-game winning streak and left them 6-2 two weekends into the season.

Their baseball counterpart lost for the first Saturday, a 6-0 defeat to L.B. Wallace at Bill Frazier Field. The Commodores dropped to 5-1 on the young season and will try to get back on track in their final game of the Visit Panama City Beach Kevin Miller Tournament when they host Chattahoochee Valley today.

Carpenter got Gulf Coast off to a fast start in softball with five runs batted in and two scoreless innings pitching in a 13-2 win over Andrew College on Friday. The Lady Commodores came back later Friday with a 9-1 win over Spartanburg Methodist, both contests shortened to five innings by the run-rule.

Gulf Coast built a 6-0 lead after three innings against Spartanburg. Brown had three hits and three RBIs and Kynadi Tipler two RBIs. Kristina Manthei pitched four innings with five strikeouts and Carpenter tossed the fifth.

The Lady Commodores edged Chattanooga State 9-7 in the opening game on Saturday. Brown had three hits, Carpenter four RBIs and Manthei went the distance. Gulf Coast led 8-0 after two innings and withstood a four-run rally in the seventh inning by Chattanooga State.

An early outburst against Faulkner State looked as though it would lead to a weekend sweep for Gulf Coast. This time the Lady Commodores couldn't survive the comeback in the sixth inning that produced all of Faulkner's offense.

Gulf Coast hurt its cause with five errors. Bailey Burk had two hits and Sam Burks and Alexis Marchozzi each had two RBIs.

The baseball Commodores will host Chattahoochee Valley starting at 4 p.m. at Frazier Field.
