GC diamond teams have winning weekends

The Gulf Coast diamond teams were in action over the weekend, with the baseball team winning two of three on the road and the Lady Commodores softball squad taking three of four at Joe Tom King Field.

The Lady Commodores (7-2) split a pair of games on Friday in their home debut, losing to Wallace State-Hanceville 7-6 and beating Coastal Alabama-Bay Minette 7-0. The nightcap against Gordon State was cancelled due to weather.

Hannah Poole took the loss against Wallace State-Hanceville, coming on in relief of starter Alexa Shiver and surrendering three earned runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.

Sam Sisco and Taylor Robinson had two hits each to lead the Gulf Coast offense, with Dixie Guesnard adding a solo home run. Kaylee Raines was 1 for 2 with a triple, two walks, two runs, and an RBI.

Brittany Crowson and Hannah Poole combined for the shutout in Friday’s win, with Crowson going five innings and giving up four hits and two walks to get the decision.

Raines had a monster game at the plate, finishing 4 for 4 with two doubles, a triple, two runs, and three RBI. Guesnard was also 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI.

The Lady Commodores swept a doubleheader with Georgia Military on Sunday, taking the first game 7-6 and the second 12-4.

Gulf Coast got two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to push the first game into extra innings and added two more in the eighth to win it. Crowson again got the win in relief, pitching 5 1/3 innings and allowing four unearned runs on five hits with three walks and a strikeout.

Shiver went 4 1/3 innings to get the decision in the back end of the doubleheader, allowing no runs on three hits and four walks.

Raines led GC with five total hits on the day, with Kristina Warford and Taylor Robinson adding four hits each. Warford also led the team with five RBI for the day, with Robinson driving in three runs.

The Gulf Coast baseball team (2-4) spent the weekend in Palatka, notching its first win on Friday 2-1 over Chattahoochee Valley before splitting games Saturday and Sunday. Gordon State beat the Commodores 3-2 on Saturday in seven innings, with Brad Lord taking the loss for allowing two earned runs in the top of the seventh.

Brett Wisely started and surrendered just one unearned run on six hits with four strikeouts in six innings. Wisely also went 2 for 3 with an RBI at the plate, while Stevie Moffatt was 4 for 4 with a double and a run.

Moffatt again led the way offensively in Sunday’s 4-2 win over Andrew College, going 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI. Evan Johnson, Kyler Hultgren, and Brycen Braswell all drove in runs for GC as well.

Alex Lozado started and went four innings to get the win, allowing one earned run on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Jack Guzek got the save for going two innings in relief and giving up one earned run on four hits and four strikeouts.

Gulf Coast baseball is back in Palatka next weekend for three games against Broward, Florence-Darlington, and Miami-Dade. The Lady Commodores are in Dothan, Ala., Friday and Saturday for four games against Florida Southwestern, Walters State, Meridian, and Snead State.
