GC men, women pick up wins

Both Gulf Coast’s men’s and women’s basketball teams notched victories away from home Friday night, with the No. 1 Lady Commodores earning an impressive road win over No. 5 Walters State.


The Gulf Coast women won the season-opener in Morristown, Tenn., 59-58 on a buzzer-beating layup by Taylor Emery, who finished with a game-high 22 points on 9 of 18 shooting from the field. LaSonja Edwards added 13 points and six rebounds, while Maria Castro had 11 points, and Shayla Bennett eight points.


Gulf Coast’s men moved to 2-0 with their second win in as many days in Pensacola, knocking off Santa Fe 77-69 in overtime. Jeremy Harris led the way for the Commodores with 27 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. Tyler Byrd added 11 points for GC, with Van Johnson and Will Robinson scoring 10 each. Londell King had eight points and eight rebounds.


The Lady Commodores play again Saturday against Roane State at noon CDT, while the Gulf Coast men play two more away from home next weekend against Atlanta Metro and Gordon State in Barnesville, Ga.
