GC women rout Florida Southwestern

PANAMA CITY – Gulf Coast women's basketball team concluded its weekend Sunday with an easy 85-51 victory over Florida Southwestern at the Billy Harrison Field House.


The top-ranked Lady Commodores (4-0) made their home debut Friday night in a 79-71 win over No. 21 Vincennes, and improved to 2-0 on their home court with Sunday's victory.


Shayla Bennett led Gulf Coast with 17 points, while Maria Castro added 15 points and nine rebounds. Taylor Emery had 14 points, three assists, and three steals, while Ty Purifoy had a team-leading nine assists and three steals. Jhileiya Dunlap and LaSonja Edwards each had nine points, with Shaterrika O'Neal adding seven.


LaToya Ashman led Florida Southwestern with 12 points, with Kiarra Meeks adding 11. Gulf Coast will play again Tuesday night at home against L.B. Wallace at 5 p.m.
