Gulf Coast women win again

MORRISTOWN, TENN. — The Gulf Coast women’s basketball team notched their second straight win to start the season Saturday afternoon, knocking off Roane State 84-47 to improve to 2-0.


The top-ranked Lady Commodores won their regular season-opener Friday 59-58 over No. 5 Walters State on a buzzer-beating layup by Taylor Emery, who again led the way Saturday with 21 points on 9 of 14 shooting from the field. Emery also added five rebounds and three assists.


Shaterrika O’Neal also had 13 points and five assists for Gulf Coast, with Shayla Bennett contributing 11 points, and Jhileiya Dunlap 10. Maria Castro and LaSonja Edwards each had eight points, with Castro adding seven rebounds and three assists.


Gulf Coast led by just two after one quarter, but the Lady Commodores blew it open in the second quarter by outscoring the

Raiderettes 22-8 to take a 39-23 halftime lead. The Lady Commodores continued to build on their lead in the third quarter by outscoring Roane State 20-8.


The Lady Commodores next play at home Friday against No. 21 Vincennes at 5 p.m.
