The Gulf Coast women’s and men’s basketball teams conclude their regular season Saturday night in Marianna against Chipola. The women’s game will tip off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.

The Lady Commodores (22-2 overall, 10-1 in the Panhandle Conference) come in ranked No. 2 in the country and No. 1 in the state and have already clinched the outright league championship after their 77-58 home win over Pensacola State last week. They’ll wrap up their league schedule against a Chipola (14-12, 3-8) squad that dealt them their only conference loss of the season back

on Jan. 20 when the Lady Indians won 64-60 in Marianna.

Gulf Coast was held to its second-lowest scoring output of the Panhandle season in the loss, but the Lady Commodores avenged that defeat with an 87-51 rout of Chipola on Feb. 7 in Panama City. The Lady Commodores have only seriously been tested once since their only league setback, winning the last seven contests by an average margin of 18.1 points per game. They’ve won the last four by 22.8 points per game since losing starting shooting guard and second-leading scorer Kionna Jeter for the season.

Sophomore point guard Shayla Bennett continues to lead Gulf Coast in conference play at 21.1 points per league outing to go with 2.6 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.8 steals. Sophomore power forward Jhileiya Dunlap is adding 12.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, and three blocked shots per conference game. Courtajia Sanders is leading the Lady Indians in conference scoring at 13.1 points per game, followed by Tyra Johnson at 10.7. Valerie Nesbitt adds 9.1 points and 4.1 assists per conference game.

The men’s game is also absent of any postseason ramifications, as Chipola (19-7, 7-4) has already locked up the second state tournament berth from the Panhandle and Gulf Coast (16-12, 2-9) will finish in last place in the league standings. The Indians clinched their playoff berth in the last two games with a 98-91 home win over Northwest Florida State and a 66-61 road victory over Pensacola State.

Chipola won each of the previous two meetings this season over Gulf Coast: 81-69 in Marianna and 89-65 in Panama City. TJ Howard is leading the Indians in conference play with 16.1 points and 4.3 assists per game, followed by Shamarkus Kennedy with 15.4 points and 7.1 rebounds per contest. Brandon Mahan is also averaging 14.5 points on 48.5 percent shooting from the 3-point line in league games.

Gulf Coast is coming off of its second Panhandle win of the season after defeating Pensacola State 65-54 last week at home. Will Robinson has been the top performer for the Commodores in conference play, averaging 20.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Quadree Smith is also putting in 10.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per league contest.
