Gulf Coast returns home to face Pensacola State

The Gulf Coast women’s and men’s basketball teams will return home Saturday for a doubleheader against Pensacola State in Panhandle Conference action at the Billy Harrison Field House. The women’s game will tip off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.

 

The Lady Commodores (14-1 overall, 2-0 in the Panhandle) come in ranked No. 3 in the nation and No. 1 in the state, while the Lady Pirates (16-1, 0-1) are No. 10 in the country and No. 4 in the state.

 

Gulf Coast took their first two league outings with an 81-64 home win over Tallahassee and a 50-48 away victory over Northwest Florida State on Wednesday. Sophomore guard Kionna Jeter has been the go-to player for GC with scoring outputs of 26 and 19 points to lead the way in both games. She’s also the Lady Commodores’ leading scorer for the season at 20 points per game.

 

Pensacola State fell to Northwest Florida State 78-74 in overtime in its league debut, with sophomore point guard Nia Johnson putting in 22 points and four assists on 7 of 11 shooting in the loss. Johnson is one of five Lady Pirates players averaging double figure points for the season led by Naterria Luster (13.2), followed by Ta’Sheanne Armstrong (12.6), Mylashia Yancey (11.5), Johnson (11.4), and Ahyiona Vason (10.3).

 

On the men’s side, both teams come in looking for their first conference victory. Pensacola State (11-7, 0-1) dropped its league opener to Northwest Florida State 74-64, while Gulf Coast (14-5, 0-2) is coming off of a pair of lopsided losses to start its Panhandle slate. The Commodores lost its conference debut at home to Tallahassee 91-73 and were crushed 95-53 by Northwest Florida State on Wednesday.

 

Gulf Coast has shot just 36.2 percent from the field in conference play and 19.4 percent from the 3-point line, while allowing opponents to shoot 53.7 percent from the field and 36.6 percent from three. Will Robinson is leading the Commodores with 24.5 points per game in conference play, followed by Marlon Adams at 12 points per game.

 

The Pirates have a very balanced offensive attack with five players averaging between 9.1 and 12 points per contest led by Willesly Butler (12) and followed by Daryl Lewis (11.8), Yeikson Montero (9.9), Matt Johnson (9.3), and Carlos Rosario (9.1).
