The Gulf Coast women’s and men’s basketball teams will hit the road to take on Tallahassee on Saturday in Panhandle Conference action. The women’s game will tip off at 4:30 p.m. Central Time, with the men’s game to follow at 6:30 p.m.

The Lady Commodores (16-2 overall, 4-1 in the Panhandle Conference) come in ranked No. 4 in the nation and No. 1 in the state, while the Lady Eagles (18-2, 3-2) are ranked sixth in the country and third in Florida.

Gulf Coast won the first meeting between the teams 81-64 in Panama City in the league opener for both teams Jan. 6, with its only conference loss coming on the road to Chipola 64-60 on Jan. 20. The Lady Commodores are coming off of a 63-51 home win over No. 3 Northwest Florida State on Wednesday that gave them sole possession of first place in the league standings and clinched the season series over the Lady Raiders. Gulf Coast can do the same Saturday with a win over TCC.

The Lady Eagles’ only two losses have come on the road to Gulf Coast and Northwest Florida State, though they are coming off of a 70-69 victory at Chipola on Tuesday. That win puts TCC in a second place tie with Northwest Florida State. A Tallahassee win Saturday plus a Northwest Florida State win over Pensacola State would create a three-way tie atop the league standings between Gulf Coast, Northwest, and TCC.

Sophomore guard Shayla Bennett continues to lead GC in Panhandle play with 23.6 points per game through five outings, while backcourt mate Kionna Jeter is putting in 19.4 points per league contest. Japonica James has been the top performer in conference action for TCC with averages of 16.4 points and 5.6 rebounds, with Jas Hill adding 14 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per conference game.

On the men’s side, the Commodores (15-7, 1-4) and Eagles (14-7, 1-4) battle it out to escape the cellar of the league standings. TCC won the first meeting between the teams 91-73 but has gone into a tailspin since, losing four games in a row by an average margin of 14.3 points. The Eagles last lost at Chipola 87-66 on Tuesday.

Gulf Coast has dropped two in a row since posting its only league victory over Pensacola State, falling at Chipola 81-69 and at home to Northwest Florida State 89-63 on Wednesday.

Will Robinson is leading the Commodores in scoring during conference play with 21.8 points per game to go with 6.4 rebounds per game, while Quadree Smith is putting in 10.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per league contest. Javien Williams has been the top league performer for TCC at 24.6 points per game on 49.4 percent shooting from the field, 43.2 percent from the 3-point line, and 96 percent from the free throw line.

Corey Douglas is also averaging 12.3 points per game in conference play, followed by Leon Freeman-Daniels at 11.8, and JaQuan Morris at 10.2.
