Lady Commodores rout Northwest, move back into first place

PANAMA CITY — To keep its hopes alive for winning the Panhandle Conference championship and strengthen its position to finish in the top two in the league standings, No. 7 Gulf Coast needed two things to happen Wednesday night: 1) to beat No. 5 Northwest Florida State, and 2) to have Tallahassee defeat Chipola in Marianna.

Both of the Lady Commodores’ wishes came true, as they routed the Lady Raiders 67-49 at the Billy Harrison Field House and got some help when the Lady Eagles edged past the Lady Indians 75-70.

As a result, Gulf Coast (19-4) sits tied atop the Panhandle standings with Northwest Florida State (21-3) at 7-3, with third-place Chipola now a game back in the loss column at 5-4 with two games to play.

Lady Commodores coach Roonie Scovel said her team had no shortage of motivation going into Wednesday’s third meeting with Northwest Florida State, with the win giving them the 2-1 series edge for the season and the potential tiebreaker for the top seed out of the Panhandle in the region tournament.

“You’re trying to advance and we said if we won tonight it would give us a much better chance of finishing in the top two,” Scovel said. “As far as winning the Panhandle championship, we haven’t talked about that much, just about trying to advance.

k us down or dumb us down like they did the first go-round over here. The kids came to play. We had a lot to play for tonight and I’m proud of the young ladies for how well they played.”

Gulf Coast will next play Saturday at Pensacola State before wrapping up the regular season Feb. 23 against Chipola in Panama City.
