Lady Commodores get No. 2 seed at nationals

Dustin Kent

There was no real suspense for Gulf Coast players and coaches ahead of Monday’s NJCAA Selection Show for the Division I Women’s National Championship, with the Lady Commodores having already clinched a berth in Lubbock, Tex., by winning their fourth straight state championship on Saturday in Ocala.

The only matter at play for Gulf Coast was seeding, and the Lady Commodores (23-5) were awarded the No. 2 seed in the tournament, behind only top seed and nation’s No. 1 Wabash Valley (31-0).

Gulf Coast will open play in the national tournament March 19 against the winner of No. 15 Walters State vs. No. 18 Miles.

Northwest Florida State (24-5), which fell to Gulf Coast in the state championship game, is the No. 11 seed and will open play March 19 against No. 22 NOC-Enid.

The Lady Raiders were the only Panhandle Conference team to get an at-large bid to the tournament, with Chipola (22-6) and defending national champion Tallahassee (25-5) being left out.

Florida Southwestern State (29-3) claimed the other at-large berth from Florida. The Buccaneers, who lost to Gulf Coast 91-75 in the state semifinals, are seeded No. 17 and opens March 18 against No. 16 Cochise. The winner will take on Wabash Valley on March 19.

The tournament semifinals will be March 22 and the championship game March 23. The Lady Commodores, who lost in the semifinals to Tallahassee in last year’s tournament, are searching for their sixth national championship and their third in the last four seasons.
