No. 7 Gulf Coast rallies from 22 down to beat Pensacola
By Dustin Kent

PANAMA CITY — Four days after going on the road and knocking off the No. 1 team in the country, No. 7 Gulf Coast found itself trailing by 22 points in the third quarter to last-place Pensacola State on Wednesday night.

That’s life in the Panhandle Conference for you. Despite the big deficit, the Lady Commodores battled back to take a 91-83 overtime victory to improve to 17-3 overall and 5-2 in league play. The Lady Pirates fell to 0-6 in the Panhandle and 14-8 overall.

“The Panhandle is such a grind,” Gulf Coast coach Roonie Scovel said. “It’s just hard. I don’t know that I’ve ever described it that way, but it’s so hard. You can’t even get excited about what you just did because the next battle is probably harder than the one you just won or lost, so there’s not time to celebrate or get excited.”

The Lady Commodores got a bigger battle than they were bargaining for from the Lady Pirates, who burned the nets up for eight 3-pointers in the first half to take a 50-31 lead at the break. Pensacola State had broken 60 points in a full game just once in Panhandle play coming in.

Sade Mobley scored 17 points in the first half for Pensacola State after scoring just 13 points total in her first five Panhandle games. It was that kind of night for the Lady Pirates, who continued to pour it on to start the second half, getting a driving layup from Kaiya Burnett and a 3-pointer from Brandi Washington to go up 55-33 with 8:14 on the third quarter clock.

Gulf Coast charged back with a quick 9-0 run featuring four points from Alexus Dye, two free throws from Naomi Marshall, and a corner 3-pointer from Astou Gaye. Another corner three for Brittany Davis got Gulf Coast to within single digits at 59-51 with 4:24 left in the third.

An offensive rebound and putback by Dye followed by a steal and layup from Davis cut it to 71-66 midway through the fourth quarter. A three-point play by Dye pulled GC to within two with 1:40 left in regulation, with a pair of free throws by Davis tying it up at 75-75 with 1:27 on the clock.

Pensacola State had the last shot in regulation, but Burnett’s step-back three rimmed out as time expired. Davis opened the overtime period with a driving bank shot and a pull-up jumper in transition to give Gulf Coast an early four-point edge.

Davis scored again in transition with a layup plus the foul, converting the three-point play to make it 84-77 with 2:56 remaining. Dye’s three-point play with 43.3 seconds left all but put the game to bed with the Lady Commodores leading 89-82.

Dye finished the game with 30 points, with Davis adding 28. Washington had 30 points on six 3-pointers in the losing effort for Pensacola State.

It was an impressive comeback for the Lady Commodores necessitated by a slow start and some red-hot shooting from the visitors. At halftime, Scovel said there wasn’t much discussion of strategy, simply effort.

“We said at halftime there was no play to draw up, nothing to talk about except that you have to dig deep down in your heart and say we’re gonna play hard,” she said. “I didn’t know if we could come back because they were shooting the ball so well. Fortunately we made some stops, got some turnovers with the full-court pressure, and once we got a little momentum we got excited and played pretty smart after that.”

Gulf Coast will next play Saturday at Chipola. Pensacola State is at Tallahassee on Saturday.
