GC women, men look to stay unbeaten

Gulf Coast will be back in action Tuesday night to put its four-game win streak on the line as Lurleen B. Wallace (0-3) comes to the Billy Harrison Field House for a non-conference matchup at 5 p.m.

The top-ranked Lady Commodores (4-0) have yet to lose this season, though they have had a couple of close calls against No. 8 Florida Southwestern.

They’ve notched two comeback wins over the Buccaneers so far, rallying from double digit deficits in each to stay unbeaten.

Sophomore shooting guard Ahlana Smith has led the Lady Commodores in scoring in all four of their victories, including a season-high 39 points in an overtime win over Florida Southwestern on Nov. 2.

The UCLA transfer is averaging a whopping 30 points per contest thus far while shooting 53 percent from the field and 42 percent from the 3-point line.

Sophomore forward Naomi Mbandu is also having a nice start to the season with averages of 16 points and 7.3 rebounds while shooting 51 percent from the floor and 41 from deep.

Freshman guard Laila Grant is up next with 13.3 points per game while leading the team in 3-point makes (14) and 3-point percentage (51.9).

Gulf Coast will be off for two weeks following Tuesday’s game and will back in action Nov. 29-30 in Rome, Ga., against Walters State and Georgia Highlands.

GC men off to strong start

The Commodores have cruised to a 2-0 start under first-year coach Phil Gaffney, rolling over Coastal Alabama-Monroeville 89-70 in the opener and 111-62 over Florida Coastal Prep on Saturday.

Cameron Holden had 26 points, 12 rebounds, and five steals to lead Gulf Coast in Saturday’s home opener and is currently leading the team with 21 points and 9.5 rebounds per contest.

Gulf Coast has four other players averaging double figure points in Jacolbey Owens (13.5), KK Godwin (13.0), Maurice Gordon (12.0), and Grant Howard (12.0).

The Commodores have two games this week against Georgia Highlands (2-2) on Thursday and Daytona State (4-1) on Saturday.
