Gulf Coast women edge past Eastern Florida

By Dustin Kent

AMERICUS, Ga. — The Gulf Coast women’s basketball team made it three wins in as many days on Tuesday afternoon by knocking off a game Eastern Florida State team 82-79.

With the win, the top-ranked Lady Commodores improved to 13-0 on the season, while the No. 25 Titans fell to 12-4.

Ahlana Smith scored 22 points on 8 of 17 shooting to lead Gulf Coast, while D’Asia Gregg added 16 points on 5 of 11 from the field.

Tatiana Jones had 14 points and 11 rebounds and came up with the biggest play of the game, stealing an inbounds pass from halfcourt with 3.5 seconds left to seal the victory.

Naomi Mbandu also had 10 points and eight rebounds. Stephanie Torres was the leading scorer for Eastern Florida State with 24 points.

The Titans made 15 of 30 shots from the 3-point line and took advantage of some poor Gulf Coast free throw shooting - the Lady Commodores made just 14 of 26 for the game - to keep it close.

While it wasn’t the cleanest performance for the Lady Commodores, it was another quality win over a ranked team to close out their pre-conference schedule.

“I think we learned a lot about ourselves,” Gulf Coast coach Roonie Scovel said of her team’s trip to Americus. “We have a lot of work to do and a lot of maturity to gain. We also have a lot of practice at the free throw line to do.

“We’re still a work in progress, but at the end of the day, if you want to look on the positive side, we gutted through some tough games against some really good teams and came out with some really good wins.”

Gulf Coast will next open play in the Panhandle Conference on Saturday with a trip to Niceville to take on No. 4 Northwest Florida State (14-0).
