PANAMA CITY — The lights went out on another baseball season at Gulf Coast State College Wednesday.
Chipola defeated GC and its 10 departing sophomores 7-6 in the finale at Bill Frazier Field. The Indians (35-19, 12-8 Panhandle Conference) strengthened their hold on second place and surged into next month’s state tournament with wins in eight of their last nine games. Read More |

PANAMA CITY — Chipola needs one win. Gulf Coast needs two.
There’s your scenario for the second and final Panhandle Conference state tournament berth after Sunday’s games. Chipola defeated Pensacola 7-4 and Tallahassee blasted Gulf Coast 11-2 in seven innings. The Indians (33-19, 10-8) took a one-game lead over the Commodores (30-19, 9-9) for second place.
The teams meet for the final two-game series starting Monday at 5 p.m. in Marianna. Chipola will clinch the state berth with a victory. GC needs a win Monday and one in Panama City Wednesday to advance. Read More |

TALLAHASSEE — Tallahassee has a habit of sneaking up on opponents late in games to steal victories. Gulf Coast was theft-proof Saturday.
The Eagles produced their patented charge, scoring two runs in the eighth and loading the bases in the ninth, but the visiting Commodores held on for a 6-3 victory in a Panhandle Conference baseball game. GC ended a four-game losing streak in improving to 30-18 overall and 9-8 in the conference. It remained tied for second place with Chipola (32-19, 9-8), which blanked Pensacola 4-0 also Saturday to stay in the hunt for the final state playoff berth. Read More |

DOTHAN, Ala. — Gulf Coast rapped out 13 hits but made four errors in an 11-10 junior-college baseball loss to Wallace State-Dothan, Ala., Tuesday.
The Commodores failed to hold on to two late leads in falling for the fourth straight game. GC led 9-8 in the eighth and 10-9 in the ninth, but the Governors tied the game with one run in each frame. Wallace then struck for the winning run in the 10th without needing to swing a bat.

PANAMA CITY — Gulf Coast’s baseball losing streak went from bad to worse Saturday.
The Commodores surrendered 18 hits, made a handful of errors and defensive miscues and lost 12-5 to the visiting Northwest Florida State Raiders at Bill Frazier Field. It was GC’s second loss in a row to NWF State, a day after giving up a late lead, and third overall in the skid that began Wednesday. NICEVILLE — Gulf Coast couldn’t hold a two-run lead late in the game and fell 4-3 to Northwest Florida State on Friday afternoon in Panhandle Conference baseball.

PENSACOLA — Gulf Coast couldn’t find an answer to Toby Thomas in a 6-0 loss to Pensacola in a junior college baseball game Wednesday.
Thomas tossed a six-hitter with five strikeouts in guiding the Pirates to a split in the teams’ recent two-game series. GC won four of the five games in the season series and fell to 29-15 overall and 8-6 in the Panhandle Conference, two games ahead of idle Chipola (28-18, 5-7) for second place. PANAMA CITY — Brendan Leach and his tired right arm added to his case for Panhandle Conference pitcher of the year honors Monday.
Leach lasted into the seventh inning on three days’ rest and Gulf Coast capitalized on five Pensacola errors to defeat the Pirates 8-5 at Bill Frazier Field. GC coach Mike Kandler was unsure how much he’d get out of Leach, who took a no-decision, but kept GC afloat for a late victory. Leach went beyond Kandler’s expectations.
“He pitched his butt off,” Kandler said. “It was an impressive thing to watch and he gave us a chance to win.”
Leach had four strikeouts and three walks while giving up five hits through 6 2/3 innings. He was replaced by Brandon Pergantis with two outs and baserunners on first and second base in the seventh inning. GC led 5-2 at the time and Hayden Kelly’s two-run single and a dropped fly ball by Kevin Husum brought in a third to help the Pirates (16-35, 3-10) tie the game against Pergantis.

MARIANNA — Tyler Dial’s two-run double in the fifth stoked the offense and Brett Maggard scattered seven hits over seven innings, as Gulf Coast defeated Chipola 4-1 in a junior college baseball game Friday.
The Commodores improved to 28-13 overall and more importantly 7-4 in the Panhandle Conference with their second straight win over the Indians. PANAMA CITY — Gulf Coast doesn’t have a stranglehold on second place in the Panhandle Conference. But the Commodores are squeezing a little harder after Thursday.
Dakota Spikes hit a grand slam and Kevin Husum added some drama on the mound, as GC held off Chipola 8-6 at Bill Frazier Field to win the first of a three-game series. The Commodores (27-13, 6-4) snapped a three-game losing streak, while the Indians slumped to a fourth loss in their last five. PANAMA CITY — Gulf Coast delivered its best shots to Tallahassee on Saturday, but the Eagles weathered every blow and showed again why they’re the favored team in the Panhandle Conference.
Tallahassee scored three runs in the top of the 15th inning to defeat Gulf Coast 11-8 at Bill Frazier Field. The victory sealed the Eagles’ fourth straight conference series win and upped their first-place record to 10-1 in Panhandle games. Patrick Riley tossed eight innings of four-hit baseball and the Eagles handed Gulf Coast a 5-1 Panhandle Conference loss Friday. The first-place Eagles (35-5, 9-1) won their sixth straight and increased its lead to 2½ games over the Commodores (26-11, 5-2), who fell for the second time in their last three contests. His walk-off home run in the bottom of the 12th inning gave Gulf Coast an 8-7 victory over visiting Northwest Florida State. PENSACOLA — Kevin Husum and Gulf Coast fended off a late rally to defeat Pensacola 6-5 on Saturday to remain unbeaten in the Panhandle Conference.
Husum worked through trouble in the ninth inning to guide GC to its sixth straight win and a 3-0 mark in the conference. The Commodores (24-9) finished the first weekend tied atop the standings with Tallahassee (29-4, 3-0), which swept its three-game series against Northwest Florida State. GC dusted off Pensacola with 11-0 and 10-2 games ending in the run rule earlier this week.

The Commodores chased Pensacola starting pitcher Matt Muench after just four batters and they cruised to an 11-0 victory in the Panhandle Conference baseball opener for both teams. The Gulf Coast baseball team will put 30 games behind it and start clean in the Panhandle Conference opener at Pensacola on Wednesday. Gulf Coast State College’s Trevin Hall is this week’s NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Baseball Player of the Week. Hall, a sophomore from Sneads, Fla., batted .600 (13-for-25) with 13 runs scored, three home runs (1.040 slugging percentage) and 13 RBI in seven games during the voting period. Hall scored at least one run in all seven games while batting safely and driving in at least one run in six of the seven contests. In fact, he had six multi-hit games and five multi-RBI games and homered in three straight games during the stretch. His top game came in game two of a doubleheader against Grand Rapids on March 6 when he was 4-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. For the week, Hall also had two doubles and walked twice.

The baseball team defeated Kankakee 12-2 in a seven-inning run-rule finish for its third straight win at Bill Frazier Field. The GC softball team swept visiting St. Petersburg 5-0, 7-0, at Joe Tom King Field in winning its sixth game in a row and ninth victory in the last 10.

Tyler Dial was 4 for 5 with a double, a home run and three RBIs to give GC its second win over Kankakee in the past three days. His two-run homer keyed a three-run second inning to break a 2-2 tie.
Trevin Hall was 2 for 4 with a two-run homer in the third to push the Commodores (17-8) to a 9-2 lead. Hall finished with four RBIs, Dakota Spikes was 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs and Kevin Husum 2 for 3. Brett Maggard had eight strikeouts and four walks while giving up four hits and two runs in the complete-game win.

PANAMA CITY — Gulf Coast had a lengthy string of scoreless innings snapped, but managed to run its winning streak to 10 games Friday in junior college baseball at Bill Frazier Field.
The Commodores, 13-2, shut out Shelton State 10-0 in six innings in the first game as Brendan Leach of DeFuniak Springs tossed a three-hitter. That gave Gulf Coast consecutive shutouts, and Matt Miller tacked on three more scoreless innings to increase the streak to 18 straight as the Commodores rallied to top Alabama-Southern 5-2 in the second game.

Dial, a sophomore from Phenix City, Ala., is batting .480 (12-of-25) with seven runs scored, one home run and 15 RBI through seven games. Dial has recorded four multi-hit games and went 2-for-3 with a go-ahead grand slam home run and six RBI against Central Alabama on January 25. He added three RBI in games against Tallahassee (January 26), St. Johns River State (February 2) and Gordon State (February 3). Dial has also posted an .880 slugging percentage and .536 on-base percentage. |

PANAMA CITY — Matt Miller cruised, Gulf Coast had two big innings and the Commodores finished the Kevin Miller Baseball Classic with a blowout win on Saturday.
The left-handed sophomore threw only 61 pitches over seven innings in holding down Gordon College in a 9-1 victory at Bill Frazier Field. Miller was in firm control aside from giving up a solo home run in the fifth inning and relievers Tres Penny and Jordan Cofield combined to lock down the two-hitter. GC finished the annual Miller Classic with a 2-1 mark after losing its opener against Andrew College on Thursday and improved to 5-2 overall.

PANAMA CITY — In baseball, what’s blown and seemingly lost can be won again.
Gulf Coast adhered to that philosophy on Friday, as it turned around its fortunes for a 6-5 victory over St. Johns River in the Kevin Miller Baseball Classic at Bill Frazier Field. Andrew College nips Gulf Coast in Miller Classic

PANAMA CITY — Gulf Coast held two leads, but the Commodores couldn’t fend off a loss on Thursday in ending a three-game winning streak.
Andrew College pushed three runs across in the final four innings, including the game-winner in the eighth, to secure a 7-6 victory in the opening game of the Kevin Miller Baseball Classic. It was the first nine-inning game of the season for the Commodores (3-2), who exploded for four tallies in the fourth for a short-lived one-run lead at Bill Frazier Field.

PANAMA CITY — Gulf Coast baseball coach Mike Kandler didn’t know what type of team he had until it stepped on the field. After Saturday, his opinion is positive.
The Commodores finished the First Pitch Classic with an 8-2 victory over Central Alabama and a 10-0 shutout of Panhandle Conference foe Tallahassee at Bill Frazier Field. GC improved to 3-1 with three straight victories after opening the tournament with a lackluster 3-0 loss to Darton College on Friday.

Night falls, Gulf Coast baseball batters Central Alabama

PANAMA CITY — Pardon the cliché, but it was like night and day for Gulf Coast’s opposing pitchers on Friday.
Darton ace A.J. Sunstrom kept the Commodores off balance in a 3-0 victory under sunny skies and warm temperatures to open the First Pitch Classic at Bill Frazier Field. The story was different with the sun down and the lights up, as Tyler Dial’s grand slam and six RBIs paced GC to a 13-3 run-rule win over Central Alabama to close the first-day schedule.

The Gulf Coast baseball team hosts the annual First Pitch Classic starting Friday at Bill Frazier Field. The GC softball team opens the season in Clearwater with the Juco Kickoff also starting Friday.

Gulf Coast baseball rebuilds in 2013 season

PANAMA CITY — Roster turnover is nothing new for Gulf Coast State baseball coach Mike Kandler.
He’s used to restocking his team each season as a result of the two-year junior-college format. Some seasons don’t require much reloading. Some seasons lead to major overhaul.
The Commodores are doing more of the latter this season.
