GC women pull away from NWF State

NICEVILLE — Second-ranked Gulf Coast State College defeated No. 4 Northwest Florida State 73-59 Saturday at The Arena to maintain sole possession of second place in the Panhandle Conference.

Gulf Coast’s (19-4, 6-3) Uju Ugoka scored 25 of her game-high 29 points in the second half. She pulled down 10 rebounds as well, including seven on the offensive end. She also sat on the bench for 18 minutes in the first half after picking up two early fouls.

Gatling overpowered Northwest Florida State in the post and guided No. 7 Gulf Coast to an 85-56 demolition of the fifth-ranked Lady Raiders in a Panhandle Conference women’s basketball game.

PANAMA CITY — The Gulf Coast women’s basketball team gets a chance to pull back the curtain for its home fans Friday.

The Lady Commodores will host Bishop State at 7 p.m. in the Gulf Coast Classic, the first time this season they’ve competed on their home floor at the Billy Harrison Field House. Pensacola plays Vincennes at 5 p.m. in the tournament’s opening game.

PANAMA CITY — Games often are the showcase for what has been learned in practice.

With the rise of AAU programs and travel teams, however, Gulf Coast women's basketball coach Roonie Scovel is finding that, for many young players, games are practice.

Asked about instilling a team concept in her players, Scovel said: "It's hard to teach, especially today. There's not a lot of practice that goes on in the lives of basketball players. There's a lot of games and club ball. They just play games. They don't practice a lot anymore."
