Lady Commodores blast No. 2 team
NEWS HERALD (Josh Weinfuss ) - MARIANNA - Gulf Coast’s first game this season against a higherranked opponent turned out like most of its other games. The fifth-ranked Lady Commodores defeated No. 2 Trinity Valley 97-68 on Saturday in the Third Annual Chipola College Alzheimer’s Classic. Andrea Smith continued an impressive start to her freshman season with 26 points including two 3-pointers. “She’s keeping on keeping on,” Gulf Coast coach Roonie Scovel said. “Let’s hope she stays healthy.” Angela Felton had 24 points, and was hot behind the 3-point arc with three treys. Chimere Jordan added 19 points. “Shot the ball really well,” Scovel said of Felton. “She really played tonight with a sense of urgency. That was nice to see.” For the second straight game Gulf Coast had 11 3-pointers. “We shot the ball real well,” Scovel said. “The first 10, 12 minutes we played real well. Good chemistry. Good shot selection. We kinda died a little bit before the half.” The Lady Commodores are 6-0.

Commodores lose at buzzer
News Herald (By Josh Weinfuss ) - OCALA - A basket at the buzzer was overturned Friday afternoon and Gulf Coast lost its second game in three outings. Marquis Gilstrap scored 24 points to lead the Commodores. The next highest scorer was Brad Reese with 10. "He played pretty good," Gulf Coast coach Jay Powell said of Gilstrap. "We've got to get more people strong with the ball and finish like men." The Commodores were 1-1 on their road trip to the central part of the state, defeating Seminole on Thursday night. The story Friday night for Gulf Coast was a matter of two halves. The Commodores led 32-26 at halftime but didn't shoot well in the final 20 minutes, Powell said. "Our defense played well," he said. "We held them to 60 points, and in a junior college basketball game, that should win that for you. "You run the same offenses and you get the same looks and when you're open you got to make it. In men's basketball if you can win one out of two going down to Seminole and Central Florida you can at least say the trip was not a total failure."
