Commodores advance to the semifinals
The Gulf Coast State Commodores turned in a strong performance in the quarterfinals and are now headed to the FCSAA Division I Men's Basketball Semifinals after defeating Indian River.
The Commodores came out strong in the first half and built a comfortable lead before the break. Devontes Cobbs led the way with 21 points at halftime, shooting 66.6 percent from the field and 71.4 percent from three point range. Trent Lincoln added 11 points and handed out six assists while shooting 71.4 percent from the field. As a team, Gulf Coast shot 52.6 percent from the field, 53.3 percent from beyond the arc, and 77.8 percent from the free throw line to take a 22 point lead into halftime.
Indian River made a push in the second half and shot 48.6 percent from the field, but the Commodores stayed in control. The Commdores shot 42.3 percent in the second half, 33.3 percent from three point range, and 70 percent from the free throw line to hold off the comeback attempt.
For the game, the Commodores shot 48.4 percent from the field, 44.4 percent from three point range, and 73.7 percent from the free throw line.
Cobbs finished with a season high 26 points along with five rebounds and five assists. Lincoln added 16 points and nine assists, while Iyran Francis recorded a double double with 17 points, 12 rebounds, and two blocks.
With the win, the No. 2 seed Commodores advance to the semifinals where they will face No. 3 seed Daytona State on Friday, March 13 at 1pm inside Raider Arena.
