Bio
Adam Sweeney enters his first season as Head Coach of the Men's Basketball program during the 2026-27 season.
Coach Sweeney is known for his work in player development, recruiting, scouting, and academics, Sweeney brings championship experience and a strong basketball background to the Commodore program.
Sweeney’s coaching journey began at Gardner-Webb University, where he first joined the basketball program as a student manager in 2011 before earning a spot on the team as a walk on in 2012. He graduated in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and later completed his master’s degree in sport pedagogy in 2017 while serving as a graduate assistant coach for the Runnin’ Bulldogs. During his time on staff, Sweeney assisted with administrative duties, player workouts, and academic oversight.
Following his time at Gardner-Webb, Sweeney spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Northwest Florida State College from 2017 to 2019. During his first stint with the Raiders, the program posted a combined 58-9 overall record, captured two Panhandle Conference Championships, won two Region VIII Championships, and made back-to-back NJCAA Elite Eight appearances. Sweeney helped coach 12 All Panhandle Conference selections, six All Region honorees, two First Team All Americans, and one NJCAA National Player of the Year. He also played a key role in the development of Chris Duarte, who earned NJCAA National Player of the Year honors before advancing to the professional level.
Sweeney then joined the staff at Wofford College as the Special Assistant to the Head Coach for the 2019-20 season. During his time with the Terriers, he assisted with daily operations and continued to gain experience at the NCAA Division I level.
After Wofford, Sweeney spent the 2021-22 season at New Mexico Junior College as an assistant coach. The Thunderbirds finished the season with a 19-13 overall record and a third-place finish in the WJCAC Conference. The program also produced multiple All Conference selections, an Honorable Mention selection, and the conference Freshman of the Year.
Sweeney later returned to Northwest Florida State College for a second stint on the Raiders’ coaching staff, continuing his work in recruiting, player development, scouting, game planning, strength and conditioning, and academic oversight. During his coaching career, Sweeney has helped mentor numerous award-winning student-athletes while also emphasizing success in the classroom, including helping teams maintain strong academic performance.
