Former Lady Commodore pitcher joins GC Softball Coaching Staff
Gulf Coast State College Softball Head Coach Scot Thomas has announced the hiring of former Lady Commodore pitcher Brittany Crowson as the program's Assistant Coach.
"I couldn't be more excited in a hire than bringing Brittany back home to Gulf Coast! She brings solid knowledge of the game at this level and loyalty to the staff, not just to me, but to Gulf Coast State in general. After taking advantage of playing at a couple different schools at the 4 year level and having played in the summer Florida Gulf Coast League, Brittany brings a unique experience to our program that will be beneficial to our pitching staff and softball student-athletes in general." Thomas said.
Crowson finished her collegiate career at the University of Montevallo (5th-year graduate). During the 2022-23 season, Crowson had a record of 8-8 with 34 appearances. While at UM, Crowson was awarded the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team honor and worked towards her Master's degree in Exercise Science, planning to graduate in December 2023.
Prior to the University of Montevallo, Coach Crowson pitched two seasons at Newberry College. Crowson finished her career at Newberry College with a record of 7-6 with 23 appearances.
Coach Crowson began her collegiate pitching career at Gulf Coast State College in 2019. During her freshman year, Crowson had a 10-4 record with 26 appearances and a career-low of 2.07 ERA. She earned All-Panhandle Conference Team and FSCAA All-Academic Team honors. Due to COVID-19 guidelines, Crowson's sophomore season was cut short. She finished her sophomore season with a record of 8-4 over 20 appearances.

Coach Thomas announced that former full-time assistant Bob Thayer, who has served in a limited role as a volunteer assistant the past 4 years will be coming back in a full-time volunteer capacity, working with the pitching staff and infielders. "Coach Thayer's experience and knowledge of the game is invaluable to our program and he is a tireless worker in the recruiting process for future Gulf Coast teams.", Thomas said. In addition, after finishing her playing eligibility, Maddy Atwater will stay on as a student assistant and will work primarily with the outfielders. Zach Shewmaker, will remain on the staff as a volunteer for his 3rd year in the program as an important part of the staff, serving in capacities that help the program in various duties.
