NJCAA nationals: Gulf Coast eliminated from tournament
NEWS HERALD (Brad Milner ) - ST. GEORGE, Utah - The run is over. Darton College scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and retired Gulf Coast in order in the seventh to win 5-4 Friday and eliminate the Lady Commodores from the NJCAA Division I junior college softball championship. Gulf Coast entered Friday needing seven straight wins for its first national title after falling into the losers' bracket on Thursday night. The Lady Commodores were 1-2 in the 16-school tournament and tied for 12th. They finished 38-22. Gulf Coast attacked for two runs in the first inning, but went scoreless through the next four, leaving three runners on and grounding into two double plays. In the sixth, Jo McAllister was doubled in by Jessica Swanson. Hannah Price, running for Swanson, came around on a throwing error to give Gulf Coast a 4-2 lead for starting and losing pitcher Heather Hughes.

GC's Morris named PC pitcher of the year
Six teammates on the All-Panhandle Conference list

NEWS HERALD (Brad Milner ) - Andrew Morris didn't necessarily set out to become the best pitcher in the Panhandle Conference. But he finished that way. The Gulf Coast right-hander was named the conference's pitcher of the year on Monday following a round of voting by the league's five head coaches. The Prattville, Ala., native was 10-2 with a 2.78 ERA, 107 strikeouts and 42 walks in 94 innings. He had six complete games and one shutout in 14 appearances, all of them starts. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound Morris was joined by six teammates on the All-Panhandle Conference list. Morris, catcher Eddie Cassidy (Mosley), outfielder Bryce Lane and Cameron Graves, at designated hitter, made the first team. Freshman pitcher Cam Greathouse made the second team and catcher Whitt Dorsey and right-handed pitcher Kyle Mitchell (Mosley) were honorable mention.

Commodores post two Top 10 stories of 2008
NEWS HERALD (Brad Milner ) - PANAMA CITY - Gulf Coast women's basketball coach Roonie Scovel has built one of the top programs in the state and the nation. But she was quickly beginning to see how difficult it was to advance to the national tournament. Back-to-back Division I national tournament championship appearances, with a title coming in 2003, were followed by three years of futility at the state tournament. Chipola College had moved past Gulf Coast, but the 2008 state showcase in Marianna was again the Lady Commodores' time to shine.
