Caraway, Gulf Coast earn Panhandle Conference softball split at Chipola

MARIANNA — The familiar Panhandle Conference mantra worked in Gulf Coast’s favor on Tuesday.
The Lady Commodores traveled to Marianna, which has been a difficult place to play in recent years, looking for at least a split against defending champion Chipola. The Lady Indians took the first game 6-2 and sought the flipside of the mantra, to sweep at home, but the Lady Commodores made sure to end any chance of that with a 15-0 blowout in the nightcap. Teams stay in contention for a title when they sweep at home and split on the road. GC (34-10) maintained that level after Tuesday and is now tied for first place with Northwest Florida State (31-10) at 4-2 in the Panhandle. Chipola (28-5, 2-2) stayed in second place following its second straight conference split.
GC played most of the doubleheader without shortstop and emotional leader Amanda Grimaldo, who left the opener after being hit by a pitch on the hand. GC coach Susan Painter feared Grimaldo had broken her hand, but X-rays later revealed the sophomore avoided major damage.

PANAMA CITY — Softball teams don’t need to win the Panhandle Conference to make a run at a state or national title, but that doesn’t take away the satisfaction of hoisting a championship trophy.
Gulf Coast State proved that notion last season, falling just shy of an NJCAA berth as the third seed from the conference in what was one of coach Susan Painter’s most memorable marches. The top four of the five-team Panhandle grouping advance to the state tournament, which carries with it a national berth to the two district winners.
