Gulf Coast sweeps Alabama Southern

PANAMA CITY — Gulf Coast warmed up for its Beach Classic with a doubleheader shutout of Alabama Southern on Tuesday at Joe Tom King Field.

The Lady Commodores, 16-4, won the opener 14-0 in five innings triumphed 8-0 in a six-inning nightcap.

GC sweeps L.B. Wallace, win streak up to six

ANDALUSIA, Ala. — The Gulf Coast State softball team ran its winning streak to six games with a doubleheader sweep at L.B. Wallace on Tuesday.

Amanda Grimaldo was 3 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored and Sarah Steiner had two hits, including a home run, to pace a 14-hit attack in a 10-1 victory in the opener stopped after six innings by run rule. Taylor Nicolosi, Hilari Hopkins and Kat Vogler each had two hits each and combined to score five runs for GC (12-4), which plated seven runs in the top of the sixth. Ollivia McLemore had eight strikeouts and no walks and gave up three hits for the win.

Gulf Coast softball drops road double header

JACKSONVILLE — Gulf Coast was swept by Florida State College-Jacksonville in a junior college softball doubleheader on Friday.

FSC-Jacksonville won the first game 6-1 and edged GC 3-2 in a 10-inning game in the second. The Lady Commodores had a two-game winning streak snapped and fell to 6-4.

Gulf Coast finishes weekend 6-2

CLEARWATER — The Gulf Coast softball team finished the Juco Kickoff Classic on Sunday with a 6-2 record over three days to open the season.

Hilari Hopkins’ three RBIs paced GC to a 6-1 win over Stanly Community College of North Carolina. Natalie Walker earned the win against Stanly with four strikeouts and Heather Schulz, Hannah Strickland, Whitney Horton and Kelsey Coleman each had two hits. Coleman and Shaquel Johnson had two hits apiece and Sarah Steiner had six strikeouts and scattered three hits in a 4-0 victory over South Georgia.

GC splits games in moving to 4-2

CLEARWATER — The Gulf Coast softball team split its four games on Saturday at the Juco Kickoff Classic tournament.

The Lady Commodores (4-2) defeated Polk State 4-1 and blanked College of Central Florida 5-0. They fell 3-0 to Seminole State and 3-2 against Santa Fe.

GC Softball Preview: Toughness is key to success in 2012

PANAMA CITY — If there is one keyword for the Gulf Coast State softball team this season it’s toughness.

There were points last season, especially in critical situations, when the Lady Commodores not only didn’t play tough, but weren’t competitive either. That doesn’t sit well with coach Susan Painter, who watched as one of her arguably most talented teams slumped during Panhandle Conference play and had a lackluster showing at the state tournament for the second straight year.
